A origem deste ilustre sobrenome, baseada em referências de historiadores da época e outras encontradas por Araldis nos arquivos cadastrais de cidades e outros particulares, poderíamos afirmar, mas não assegurar, que este escudo ou outro muito semelhante a ele, surgiu inicialmente do século XI ao XIV, nomeadamente no assalto ao Alcazar de Córdova a 29 de junho de 1236, como culminar da campanha que tinha começado com alguns motins fronteiriços e terminado com a campanha de D. Fernando, rei de Castela e chamou o Santo. As referências desta família parecem especificar-se com maior frequência do século XV ao século XIX, sobretudo os acontecimentos da guarda do duque de Feria que se encarregou, juntamente com o duque de Sabóia, de defender as freiras no saque de as tropas espanholas em San Quintin a 27 de agosto de 1557.
