Famiglia originaria di Iesi di cui per lungo tempo gl'individui della medesima ebbero il dominio colla qualifica di Vicari della Santa Sede, dopo essere stata per oltre due secoli, in Cingoli ove si stabilì, poi in Osimo, ove fu trapiantata da un Federico verso la metà del XVII secolo. Vennero dal Pontefice Clemente X (Altieri 1670-1176) con Breve del 1670 nominati nobili di Macerata. La famiglia s'ebbe una cappella gentilizia della Chiesa di S. Salvatore in Lauro in Roma, la medesima famiglia venne reintegrata nella nobiltà romana, ad istanza di Ranieri, per sè e sua famiglia con Senatus Consulto del 15 Settembre 1804.
