Famiglia assai antica e nobile, nei ricordi dei tempi andati si leggono alcune varianti di questo cognome, dovute alle solite cause della pronunzia dialettale e dal modo di interpretare nella scritturazione i cognomi, è comune opinione che i Vinta, Vintaloro, Vintari e Vintauri siano tutti rami di un ceppo unico. Secondo il commento di Cristoforo Landino al XVI canto del Paradiso, i membri sarebbero discesi dai Longobardi, e precisamente da un Tebalduolo che militava sotto Alboino . Ma per quanto a sostegno di questa opinione si citino e i frequenti ritorni, negli antichi documenti, dei nomi, Longobardo e Tebalduolo, e il fatto che il medesimo personaggio nel 1280 compare fra i firmatari della pace del Card. Latino col nome di Vinta di Caccia longobardi e nel 1307, come Gonfaloniere di giustizia. Certo è che da questa famiglia sono usciti una quantità grandissima di uomini politici (107 Priori e 11 Gonfalonieri
