La famiglia influente e consolare, partecipa alla vita pubblica tra i secoli XII e XIII apparendo, sebbene sia presumibile fosse presente in Tortona sin dal secolo precedente, per la prima volta nelle antiche cronache del 1122 anno in cui i tortonesi confortati da una prima forma di governo autonomo che estromise nel 1090 l'allora decadente amministrazione regia, decisero di liberarsi definitivamente dal gioco straniero ed allearsi ai milanesi, tenaci avversari di ogni potestà oltremontana e quindi anche dei pavesi la città dei quali era sede e cittadella dei re germanici in terra italica. Le casate più illustri e pontenti del Tortonese, tra cui i S., costituirono il "Comune Signorile di Tortona" consolidando l'ordinamento delle magistrature e relativi poteri giurisdizionali, da ciò l'attributo onorifico di "De Civitate Terdona" ai membri di dette casate. Dai cartari, come prima notizia, rileviamo che un Gulgielmo S. è teste in atto del 15 marzo 1147
