Ancienne et noble famille toscane, de vertu claire et ancestrale, répartie au cours des siècles dans diverses régions d'Italie. L'origine de ce patronyme, selon certains historiens médiévaux, devrait être recherchée dans un patronyme, dérivé, à son tour, du nom du lieu d'origine de la famille.
