E' un ramo della R. Casa di Savoja di cui fu capostipite il prine. Tommaso nato da Carlo Emanuele il Grande e da Caterina di Spagna, il quale si ebbe in appannaggio i luoghi di Busca, Racconigi, Cavallermaggiore, Villafranca di Piemonte, Vigone, Borgo, Casella Roascio e Roccavione cui per patenti del 18 marzo 1621 si univa il luogo di Carignano. Essendosi egli disposato nel 1625 a Maria del real sangue dei Borboni di Francia, questa ebbe in eredità paterna la contea di Soissons, donde questa linea si divise in due rami tra i figli di Tommaso: quello dei Carignano e l'altro particolare dei conti detti di Soissons, cominciato da Eugenio-Maurizio e trapiantata in Francia, che finì con altro Eugenio duca di Troppau nel 1734. Il primo rimasto in Piemonte è continuato ora dai conti per rr. lett. patenti del 14 settembre 1888, colle quali S M. il Re Umberto I
