Antica ed assai nobile famiglia astigiana, nel cui territorio ha posseduto oltre venti castelli, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. La casata appartenne al gruppo delle "casane astigiane", le quali ampliarono il loro peso economico e politico in seguito al prestito della valuta e al commercio. I Solari capitanarono il partito guelfo astigiano e governarono per circa cinquant'anni la città tanto che, per il loro ruolo politico e l'ingente patrimonio, furono accostati ai Visconti, Torriani, Scaligeri e Medici. Ben 27 individui di questa famiglia vestirono l'abito dell'Ordine di Malta dal 1433 al 1700, e 15 furono insigniti dell'Ordine supremo della SS. Annunziata dal 1618 al 1788. Altro ramo.
