Fino dal sec. XII si hanno nei documenti notizie dei Benzi, una delle fam.di grandi del Valdarno superiore, dove possedevano beni a Lucolena e a Castelluccio e casa con torre a Figline. Giovanni, di maestro Betto, accusato in una tamburazione del 1372 come magnate e potente, si trasferì nel 1399 in Avignone, mentre suo figlio Francesco passò nello stesso anno ad abitare in Montevarchi, ove trovasi tassato come nobile nei primi estimi del Quattrocento. Da suo figlio Giovanni, detto il Soldano, originò il nuovo cognome. Nell'attuazione della legge del 1750 sul regolamento della nobiltà e cittadinanza in Toscana, Ferdinando, di Massimiliano Soldani Benzi, auditore della Ruota fiorentina,ottenne per sè, per il fratello abate Lucantonio e per i nipoti figli dell'altro fratello Francesco, premorto, l'ammissione alla nobiltà fiorentina, accordata con i decreti 28 marzo 1753 e 19 dic. 1757.
