Antica ed assai nobile famiglia di Chieri, passata a risiedere, primieramente, in Pinerolo e, successivamente, in Torino, le cui prime memorie certe risalgono alla fine del secolo XVI. Appartenne a tal illustre casato quel Francesco, di Gio. Antonio, che fu aiutante di guardaroba di S.A., segretario dell'Intendenza del Principe di Carignano e valente musico suonatore nella Cappella Reale. Chi lo superò grandemente nella musica, lasciando nome glorioso nell'arte del violino fu suo figlio Giambattista (n. 1686; dec. Torino, 14 agosto 1765), che ebbe la carica di primo violino del Re. Non indegno del fratello nell'arte musicale fu il fratello Lorenzo (n. Torino 14 novembre 1688; dec, 1775), che fu virtuoso di violino di S.M. Visse costui quasi sempre a Parigi e fu anche valente pittore. Figlio di Giambattista fu Ignazio (n. Torino il 10 luglio 1718; dec. 25 giugno 1793), che fu medico ed ebbe la carica di capo
