Einige Schriftsteller glauben, dass dieser Familienzweig der Gualandi von Pisa seinen Namen von der Terra di Somma in der Nähe des Vesuvs hat; und noch andere glauben, dass die Familie Spinelli, die oft "de Summa" genannt wurde, weil sie feudale Besitztümer in der Nähe des oben genannten Landes Somma besaß. Tatsächlich gab Friedrich II. Seit 1239 Kaiser von Lombard zwei lombardische Geiseln: Oberto und Percivalle an die Barone von Picerno und Saponara; und es ist daher eine verlässlichere Meinung, dass diese aus der Lombardei im Königreich Neapel diese Familienmeinung auch vom Historiker Aldimari geäußert haben.
