Ancient and illustrious family, originally from Lombardy, which has spread over the centuries in various regions of Italy. Numerous characters of this surname are often mentioned in the notarial documents since the past centuries, from which it appears that they were in a comfortable and conspicuous condition. Giuseppe and Luigi Sommaruga, in the tenth ninth century, practiced advocacy in the jurisdiction of Milan; Angelo, Antonio and Cesare died, between 1860 and 1866, in honoring their country in arms; Pietro was a notary in Brandate. To Mrs. Carolina Sommaruga, widow Maraini, was granted, with Royal Decree of motuproprio of 3 September 1926, followed by the Royal License Letter March 31, 1928, the title of countess (personal) and the emblem, with which it is entered in the Book of Gold and in the Italian Noble Official List.
