La famiglia discende, per via d'adozione, dalla Casa Imperiale degli Absburgo. Tra il 1665 e il 1670 viveva, alla Corte dei Gonzaga in Mantova, tale Benedetto Sordia, di Bartolomeo, il quale essendo senza prole, di buon grado si assunse l'adozione di un figliuolo della duchessa Isabella Clara d'Austria (vedova del duca Carlo II di Mantova, figlia di Leopoldo, arciduca del Tirolo, e nipote dell'imperatrice Ferdinando II), cui fu imposto il nome di Ferdinando. Da allora la famiglia Gonzaga, in riconoscenza di tanta affezione e fedeltà, assecondandolo nei suoi traffici, rese in breve tempo quel Benedetto assai ricco, tanto ch'egli si potè così costruire (sulle case degli Agnelli) il sontuoso palazzo della famiglia tuttora abitato dai discendenti, mirabile ed imponente costruzione barocca dell'architetto Gefles, fiammingo, ornato di colossali statue del Barberini; sull'angolo poi della facciata spicca il busto di esso Benedetto con queste parole: "Animo Longe Major Benedictus Surdius
