La famiglia Sormani è oriunda dalla Lombardia, e si trasferì a Reggio E. nella prima metà del sec. XVIII, e Giuseppe, già morto prima del 1752, è detto nei documenti milanesi. I Sormani in quell'epoca erano mercanti, e come tali sono specialmente indicati i figli di Giuseppe, Giambattista e Pietro. Quest'ultimo sarebbe ascritto all'arte della seta, e nel 1732 ebbe dalla Comunità la concessione di una bottega in Piazza Grande a titolo di livello fino alla quarta generazione. Egli ebbe tre figli: Francesco, Maria e Carlo che abitavano insieme un caseggiato di loro proprietà (poscia di proprietà Ancini) in via Spadari, ora via Farini, e nell'ammezzato di esso avevano il negozio di stoffe; e col loro commercio si erano procurate ricchezze ed una molto distinta posizione. Giuseppe era diviso dai fratelli ed abitava la casa, che fu poi dei Riva Sanseverino, nella vicina di S. Lorenzo. Francesco, Maria e Carlo
