Antichissima famiglia patrizia milanese, originaria di Sormano, alpestre villaggio tra i monti della Vallassina. Le prime notizie storiche risalgono a Ottone De Solmanno, di Anselmo, partigiano di Federico Barbarossa nella lotta contro Milano, onde i suoi beni, al tempo dell'assedio, furono confiscati dal Comune (cfr. atto del 28 agosto 1178, conservato nel R. Archivio di Stato in Milano, Raccolta delle Pergamene , Chiaravalle, art. 555, pergamena N. 132). Secondo il Fagnani (Familiarum Commenta, ms. in Archivio di Stato in Milano, vol. VIII, pag. 483) Albertino de Sormano era uno dei più ricchi cittadini di Milano: figura infatti fra i centoventi milanesi, ai quali con decreto del 22 marzo 1395, Gian Galeazzo Visconti impose un prestito di 19.000 fiorini d'oro alla Camera Ducale.
