Antica ed assai nobile famiglia della Sardegna, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Filippo IV, re di Spagna, volendo ricompensare gli alti meriti e le elette doti dell'animo, desiderando rendere omaggio alla onorata stirpe da cui aveva tratto i natali e volendolo innalzare a maggior grado di onore e di dignità, coi diplomi in data 28 agosto 1632 e 21 aprile 1643, concedeva i titoli di cavaliere e di nobile a Gabriele Sotgiu, di Sardegna, ed ai suoi figli e discendenti maschi da maschi. Col primo dei detti diplomi il sovrano concedeva pure agli stessi l'uso delle armi gentilizie. Ben degni servizi aveva dovuto egli rendere allo Stato, sia in pace che in guerra, se il sovrano nel rievocarli sentì la necessità di mettere in evidenza nel diploma nobiliare specialmente quelli prestati nel Parlamento presieduto dal viceré duca di Avellana.
