Assai nobile ed antica famiglia che il Galluppi pretender di far discendere dall'illustre casato degli Este. In ogni modo, la famiglia Sottile ha goduto di nobiltà certa in Messina ed in Palermo, sin dal XV secolo. Tra i molti esimi personaggi, a cui essa diede i natali, senza nulla voler levar al valore degli omessi, ricordiamo: Niccolò, palermitano, dottore in leggi, che acquistò, nel 1405, la terza parte della tonnara di San Nicolò, fu secreto di Palermo nel 1409, ottenne a 1 settembre 1433 l'investitura del feudo Alfano e a 20 ottobre 1433 dei feudi Molisena e Bombiscuro e fu capitano di giustizia di Palermo nell'anno 1455-56; Ottavio, che fu pretore di detta città nell'anno 1434-35-36; Scipione, che fu senatore negli anni 1472-73, 1480-81; Rinaldo, che fu giudice della corte pretoriana di Palermo negli anni 1480-81, 1483-84; Giovanni, che fu senatore negli anni 1502-3, 1511-12, 1514-15 e possedette nell'anno 1516
