Questa famiglia, che sembra prendesse il cognome da un "Sozzo di Fante", da Casore del Monte in Val di Nievole, dove aveva terre e castella, verso il 1200, quando furono distrutte le castella della campagna, discese a Pistoia, subito ottenendovi l'ascrizione all'Ordine magnatizio. Bouldrone, di Soldo Sozzifanti, console dei soldati nel 1207 e Teberto d'Arciprete, appaiono nel 1209 tra i rappresentanti di Pistoia che giurarono la pace tra il loro comune e quello di Bologna. Messer Sozzafante fu giudice delle cause e consigliere del comune nel 1267. Ser Lapo, suo figlio, fu uno dei quattro savii incaricati della riforma degli statuti nel 1283, giudice nel 1297, e nel 1309 deputato a trattare gli accordi coi conti di Mangona. Il capitano Arrigo, di Soffredi, cadeva il 29 agosto 1315 nella battaglia di Montecatini contro Uguccione della Faggiuola. G.B. di Crollalanza, edito presso la direzione del giornale araldico, Pisa 1888; "Enciclopedia Storico-Nobiliare Italiana di V. Spreti" vol. VI; "Raccolta Ceramelli Papiani" custodita presso l'archivio di stato di Firenze fasc.4444. Note nella raccolta lo stemma è assegnato anche ai Sozzifanti di Firenze, Santa Maria Novella, Lion bianco; nei Libri d'oro gli smalti sono diversi (argento e nero), probabilmente in modo erroneo. Aurelio Sozzifanti,nato nel 1662, cavaliere di Santo Stefano, conseguì la cittadinanza fiorentina. e
