Antica famiglia, che col tempo prese il nome di Fetonti allorquando per le civili discordie un Fetonte degli Spadi nel 1335, insieme a Papirio e Filippo ed i figliuoli di questi, volle dividersi alla propria agnazione, e successivamente furono detti Tonti. Camillo e Pietro furono valorosi capitani, il primo nel 1500, e l'altro nel 1543. Pier-Antonio vestì l'abito di Malta; Domizio e Jacopo nel 1679 vestirono quello dei cavalieri di S. Stefano di Toscana, di cui fu gran conservatore lo stesso Jacopo nel 1701; Francesco del Cav. Domizio Tonti nel 1708 fu aggregato alla stessa milizia, e nel 1731 ebbe la dignità di gran priore del Convento. Fu costume delle più antiche famiglie, le quali dopo la caduta del Romano Imperio, in quella inondatione de' Barbari, havendo i loro cognomi, sicome gli studi, e altre cose belle smarrito e restati solo con semplici nomi, trarre di nuovo i loro cognomi,
