Ancienne et très noble famille du Royaume des Deux-Siciles, connue sous le nom de Spagnuolo, espagnol ou, plus anciennement, Español, de vertu claire et ancestrale, répartie au cours des siècles dans diverses régions d'Italie. Selon ce qui nous est transmis, la famille est en fait originaire de Huesca et son ancêtre se trouve dans le noble Bernardo Español, consul et juré du territoire et de la mer de Majorque, florissant en 1248. Passé dans le royaume de Naples, avant le XVe siècle, il a changé son nom de famille en espagnol ou en espagnol. Selon Galluppi, la famille jouissait de la noblesse à Messine depuis le XVe siècle. Il a été attribué à la Mastra Nobile del Mollica et, en la personne de l'illustre Don Benedetto Spanish, en 1811, reçu dans la Congrega Militare Compagnia, sous le titre de Notre-Dame de la Purification appelée Chandeleur de 'Verdi.
