Tra le vecchie famiglie d'Italia quella dei Spatta del ramo veneto risale al 1259, in cui si trovano per la prima volta a Venezia detti anche dalla Spa, che diedero il nome al sottoportico sulla fondamenta di S. Marziale dove avevano le loro case. Nel 1366 Giacomo , pievano e notaio a S. Sofia, apparteneva alla Scuola di S. Giovanni Evangelista; nella quale, in seguito, fu nominato Guardian grande Polo, la cui figlia, Lucrezia, sposava Matteo Foscarini nel 1465. Altri si imparentarono con alcune famiglia patrizie tra le quali i Barbo ed i Marcello. Avevano le loro tombe nelle chiese di S. Marcuola e di S. Maria dei Servi; Giovanni, zio di Chiara, sposa di Giuseppe Sommariva, nel 1465 fece costruire una sepoltura alla propria consorte Orsa Catena, nella chiesa di S. Francesco della Vigna. Dall'esame di alcuni documenti risulta che Leonarda, moglie di Federico, testò il 16 luglio 1389;
