Nel XV secolo questa famiglia fioriva nel castello di Montegibbio, del cui Comune sosteneva le cariche più elevate, e nel XVI si divise in due rami: l'un de' quali col cognome Benincasa si estinse nel 1863; l'altro, che continuò a chiamarsi Spezzani, fu ascritto alla cittadinanza sassolese nel 1737. Altro ramo. Antica e nobile famiglia, originaria della Romagna. Altra famiglia alzò per arma. D'azzurro, al leone d'oro, colla banda dello stesso, caricata di tre crocette di rosso, attraversante sul tutto; col capo di rosso, caricato di tre crocette d'argento. La presenza dell'arma e del motto nella bibliografia documentata della famiglia Spezzani ci conferma l'avita nobiltà raggiunta dalla casata. Infatti l'origine del motto risale a circa il XIV secolo e deve essere ricercata in quei detti arguti che venivano scritti sui vessilli o bandiere dei cavalieri, esposti alle finestre delle locande in cui questi alloggiavano, in occasione dei tornei, e durante
