Très ancienne et noble famille émilienne originaire de Bologne qui s'est installée dans la région de Vénétie à Padoue au cours du XVIIIe siècle. Parmi les premiers membres illustres de la famille Spinelli dei Carbonari, on note un Arinerio Spinelli en 1295 et un Dinadato Spinelli en 1335 qui étaient chanoines de la cathédrale de Vérone. Ce Dinadato Spinelli, fils de Iacopo Spinelli des Carbonesi de Bologne, avait un frère chevalier nommé Bonifacio ; tous deux citoyens de Vérone.
