Nobilissimo casato romano, il quale discende, per via diretta, dall'illustre famiglia spagnola de Espinosa, il cui capostipite, secondo la tradizione, si rinviene in quel Sancho, maggiordomo del conte di Castiglia Don Sancho. La famiglia, dunque, trasse il proprio nome dalla città di Espinosa de los Monteros, ed ivi sono sparsi in diverse provincie, ove hanno ottenuto titoli e cardinalati. Fra gli uomini illustri che da essa uscirono, ricorderemo il cardinale Don Diego de Espinosa, creato nel 1568 e morto il 5 settembre 1572. Un ramo della famiglia de Espinosa giunse in Roma nel XV secolo, ove, per semplicità fonico dialettale, iniziò a cognominarsi Spinosi. Nel 1479, Paolo Spinosi, dottore e scrittore apostolico, fu ricevuto nella Compagnia del Salvatore, chiaro segno di nobiltà.
