Famiglia assai antica ed illustre, originaria del territorio di Udine, i nomi dei suoi componenti si trovano soprattutto ricordati in contratti di acquisto di terre e case. Del suo capostipite non si hanno notizie certe, è comune opinione sia un Adalberto di Antonio di Giovanni che passò in Venezia nel 1576 per sfuggire all'epidemia di peste e prese a commerciare in tessuti ed altre mercanzie, e seguitando a negoziare con mirabile fortuna acquistò prestigio e terre. Annovera questa casata personaggi di elevate virtù, tra i quali citiamo Orsola (m.1873), accumulò una tale fortuna che nonostante il testamento dopo la sua morte ci furono lunghe contese giudiziarie tra gli eredi.
