Spoleto è senza dubbio la città umbra più ricca di storia, sopratutto per quanto si riferisce al turbinoso periodo medievale. Non si hanno notizie precise sull'epoca di fondazione; si sa solo che i Pelasgi la fortificarono con una solida cinta di mura, di cui tutt'oggi si ammirano, dopo ben oltre tre millenni, i resti grandiosi. Conquistata dagli Etruschi ed in seguito dai Romani, venne prima ridotta a colonia, poscia elevata a municipio, e nel 326 dopo Cristo dichiarata metropoli. Per la sua importante posizione strategica dovette dolorosamente subire continui e cruenti attacchi da quanti mirarono a conquistare Roma, donde l'alterna vicenda di distruzione e di riedificazione delle sue mura vetuste. Coll'occupazione longobarda avvenuta nel 569 s'inizia il periodo del suo maggiore splendore in quanto che divenne la capitale del più potente ducato che ricordi la storia dell'età di mezzo.
