Antigua familia veneciana, de clara y ancestral virtud, que se ha extendido a lo largo de los siglos en varias regiones de Italia. El origen de esta cognominación, por decir lo menos de los genealogistas ilustres, debe buscarse en un apodo, basado en el verbo veneciano "sponciàr" (= pinchazo), probablemente, dado, debido a algunas inclinaciones de caracteres, a un progenitor, hoy desconocido. En cualquier caso, esta familia, probablemente, fue decorada con el título de caballero, después de la participación, caracterizada por el coraje y el honor, bajo los estandartes de la Liga Santa, de un Pietro Sponchia, en el famoso evento de armas de la Batalla de Lepanto, de 1571.
