Ancienne et illustre famille de propriétaires terriens de Campanie, avec résidence à Sorrente, de vertu claire et ancestrale, répartie au cours des siècles dans diverses régions d'Italie. Selon une légende transmise, la branche principale de la famille s'est enfuie de Sorrente pour éviter la vengeance d'une autre famille noble, à qui ils avaient tué un évêque. Pour expier le crime, après s'être réfugiés à Ischia, où ils vivaient comme patriciens, les Sportiellos construisirent deux églises, éloignées l'une de l'autre, se faisant face : S. Carlo, en 1620, et S. Maria al Monte. Une autre chronique rapporte par contre que l'église de S. Carlo a été construite par Sebastiano Sportiello, dont le nom apparaît sur l'inscription lapidaire en accomplissement d'un vœu.
