Da "Memoria dell'origine della famiglia", conservata tra i manoscritti della Biblioteca comunale di Ferrara e attribuita allo storico ferrarese Antonio Frizzi, si rileva che questa famiglia, originaria da Milano, e prima detta dei "Sansoni", poi degli "Squarzolo" (dalla figura dell'Ercole in atto di squarciare la bocca ad un leone, rappresentata nel suo stemma) emigrò al tempo delle rivoluzioni politiche di Milano negli Stati Estensi al seguito del duca Rinaldo d'Este (1325 circa). Di là, con Giovanni Battista, di Giacomo, si trasferì in Argenta e nelle prossime località di Consandolo e di Boccaleone, dove acquistò molti possessi. Un Bartolomeo fu tra i consiglieri di Argenta nel 1461. Con Battista, creato cittadino ferrarese dal duca Ercole I (1480), la famiglia si stabilì in Ferrara, con diramazioni anche in altre città come a Senigallia, dove nel 1557 un Gian Giacomo fu aggregato a quel nobile consiglio.
