Famiglia dogale patrizia genovese, già fieramente ghibellina, delle più celebri d'Italia, che, sempre numerosissima, ha dato eminenti capitani, ammiragli, dogi, cardinali, scienziati e da Genova ha diramato le sue propaggini in tante altre plaghe d'Italia. La tradizione li vuole provenienti da un Arduino dei visconti di Narbona riparato in Genova sul cadere del X secolo, dove avrebbe sposato Oria di Corrado della Volta, i cui figli Pietro Robaldo ed Ansaldo vennero chiamati, dal nome della madre, D'Oria. Certo è che fin dal Mille questo casato si mostra grande in Genova e, per effetto della spedizione ligure-pisana in Sardegna promossa in quel secolo da papa Leone IX, divenne sovrana del giudicato del Logudor, dove si tenne salda per quattro secoli, finché gli Aragonesi conquistarono l'isola.
