Famiglia passata per giustizia all'Ordine di Malta. Gli scrittori sono discordi sulle sue origini. secondo l'Ughelli e il Cavalieri essa è originaria da Pavia, dove infatti viene annoverata fra le nobili famiglie colà esistenti nel XVI secolo, secondo altri da Como. Ma per quanto riguarda il regno di Napoli, certa cosa è che la famiglia si trovava in Sicilia nel decimoquarto secolo, e propriamente in Messina, della cui nobiltà faceva parte (v. Galluppi: Blasonario di Messina). Si trasferì in seguito nella vicina Calabria e fu ascritta alla nobiltà di Tropea al Sedile di Portercole. Il primo di cui si ha notizia in Tropea, secondo il Toraldo (Il Sedile e la nobiltà di Tropea) fu Paolo, che vi dimorava nel 1487, che ebbe per figlio Giovanni e da questo nacque un altro Paolo, uomo dotto ed in corrispondenza epistolare con Paolo Manuzio, il quale da Roma gli dirigeva il 17
