Originaria francese, fu portata in Italia al tempo di Carglomagno da un Giovanni, scudiero ed uno dei dodici conti dell'Imperatore, il quale ottenne da questo il castello detto della Stampa in Brianza, dal quale i suoi discendenti presero il nome. Stabilita la famiglia in Milano, fu quivi annoverata fra le più distinte milanesi insignita del titolo comitale. Lanfranco nel 1119 era fra i governatori della città di Milano, ed uno dei 35 primati che alla badia di Pontida diedero il privilegio di perpetua esenzione. Baldicione tenne il consolato della Repubblica Milanese, e nel 1199, in qualità di primate, insieme ad altri nobili personaggi, assistette alla memorabile dieta che si tenne in Milano dalle città d'Italia. Gabriele, Achille, Erasmo, Beltramo e Rinaldo furono decurioni di Milano nel 1340. Marco avendo sostenuto il partito della casa Sforza, lasciò sul patibolo la testa insieme a quella del suo partito, ma accorsero a vendicarlo
