Antichissima ed illustre famiglia cremonese. Alcuni storici le attribuirono come capostipite un Manicardo, padre di Oliviero, che nel 1112 era guerriero e avrebbe generato il ramo dei Stangaferro, poi conti di Castelnuovo Bocca d'Adda, e di Ubertino, uno dei 16 senatori di Cremona, nel 1117, e che avrebbe generato il ramo degli Stangaferro, marchesi di Annicco e che si chiamarono S. Trecco. Ma tale origine è sussidiata solo dalla tradizione e non da documenti genealogici. Capostipite provato degli Stangaferro, conti di Castelnuovo Bocca d'Adda, è un Samuele, governatore di Bozzolo nel 1293, ed il di lui figlio Gasparino, giureconsulto, fu eletto dal marchese Obizzo d'Este, quale giudice dei Savi in Ferrara. Da costoro segue una lunga teoria di uomini che illustrarono la patria.
