Antichissimo ed assai nobile casato germanico di cui si hanno notizie sin dal XIII secolo, con rami familiari in Sassonia, Silesia, Berlino e Prussia. La presenza dei blasoni nei principali armoriali europei ci conferma l'avità nobiltà degli Steinbach. Ricordiamo un Werner notabile in Walderburg nel 1357; un Onofri canonico in Ulm nel 1365; un Erwin, vivente nel 1381 e costruttore della cattedrale di Strasburgo. Un ramo familiare detto Steinbach-Kranichstein si propagò in Austri ove si fregiarono del titolo di Baroni il 11 luglio 1714.
