Nobilissima ed antica famiglia, originaria di Fabriano, il cui capostipite si rinviene in uno Stelluto, vissuto circa il 1200, era della potente famiglia dei Chiavelli, che fu signora di Fabriano fino al 1435; ebbe Aldovrandino, da cui un Tinto, che ebbe Stelluto e Cecco, che furono podestà di Roccacontrada (Arcevia), il primo nel 1311, il secondo nel 1338. Dette essa chiari personaggi alla patria fra cui un Francesco. Maria, celebre poetessa che appartenne all'Arcadia col nome di "Teone" e che morì il 15 ott. 1736. Nel 1622 Costanzo Michele sposò la nobile Maria Scala, contessa di Rotorscio, che ultima di sua famiglia, ottenne che inquartasse il proprio stemma, aggiungesse il cognome ed assumesse il titolo di conte di Rotoscio per sè e discendenti. In seguito a tale matrimonio, Girolamo, primogenito di Costanzo Michele, nel 1711 fu aggregato con tutta la discendenza alla nobiltà di Fabriano, e nel 1737 per il
