Antigua y muy noble familia del Reino de Nápoles, originaria de la tierra homónima de Basilicata, de donde tomó su nombre, de clara y ancestral virtud, difundida a lo largo de los siglos en diversas regiones de Italia. Según algunas reconstrucciones heráldicas, la familia sería una rama colateral de los muy nobles príncipes Colonna di Stigliano, quienes, con el tiempo, asumieron el predicado como único apellido y de hecho se nombra en algunos escritos académicos españoles. Por lo tanto, el progenitor debe identificarse como NH Don Filippo Colonna (* Roma 1642 + allí 20-4-1686), Patrizio Napoletano, Patrizio Veneto, Noble Romano, Señor de Sonnino, Caballero de la Orden del Espíritu Santo. Sin embargo, al carecer hoy de certeza genealógica, es igualmente posible que la noble familia Stigliano de Basilicata no tenga conexión con los príncipes Colonna di Stigliano y, de hecho, se encuentran rastros de ella antes del siglo X VII.
