Le prime memorie di quest'antica famiglia, risalgono ad Ugo Stivivo, il quale nel 1038 sposò Teodolinda, sorella di Rodolfo conte di Rimini. Nel 1205 trovasi uno Stivivo, di Tebaldo, dottore in leggi e provveditore delle armi dei Riminesi. Roberto, figlio di Stivivo, fu armato cavaliere da Carlo I d'Angiò, da cui poi discese Odoardo, maggiordomo maggiore e favorito del marchese di Mantova nel 1400, e dopo varie generazioni un Mario di Alessandro che vestì l'abito dei cavalieri di S. Stefano di Toscana nel 1606. Che i membri della famiglia Stivivo siano noncuranti delle cose volgari, ripromettendosi dalle sole loro energie la dovuta ricompensa, lo provano i documenti fino ad oggi conosciuti come il Dizionario Storico-Blasonico del commendatore G.B. di Crollalanza che ne ha raccolte le tracce lasciate dalla famiglia in quelle città ove ebbe dimora ricoprendo cariche legislative, militari o altro, contribuendo non poco alla riuscita di quei documenti utili
