La famiglia pare avesse in antico il nome di Stola, cambiato poi in quello De' Crema, o Cremi perché oriunda della cittá di Crema. Vi sono in Italia altre famiglie Crema, come in Piemonte (a Cavallermaggiore), a Verona, a Lucca; ma pare che queste non abbiano parentela con quella di Reggio Emilia.
