Antico ed assai nobile casato originario del territorio lombardo, propagato in Veneto, Svizzera, Emilia Romagna e Campania, di cui si hanno notizie sin dal XVIII secolo con un Giambattista Stoppa, del ramo originario di Chiavenna, che passato in Londra fu ministro della chiesa di Savoja. Vari rami familiari fioriscono tra milanese, pavese e varesotto, torinese, veronese, rovigoto, ferrarese e forlivese. L'origine di questo antico cognome deriva, probabilmente, da un soprannome originato o dal fatto che il capostipite nel proprio mestiere utilizzasse della stoppa o per costruire poltrone o divani o per calafatare imbarcazioni o che avesse caratteristiche fisiche che richiamassero la stoppa come ad esempio i capelli.
