Straforino dovette in origine essere il soprannome personale di un cittadino genovese non oscuro, discendente forse da un ramo dei Visconti, e che fu il capostipite di questa famiglia. Il suo nome si legge tra quelli de' principali cittadini, i quali nel gennaio 1157 giurarono le convenzioni stipulate dai legati di Genova col Re Guglielmo di Sicilia. Egli era armatore di una nave colla quale imprendeva viaggi a scopo di traffico fra Genova e l'Egitto. Giovanni, nipote ex filio del precedente, fu anch'egli dedito al traffico per il quale faceva lunghi viaggi in Oriente, e nel 1190 lo si trova in Tiro dove l'11 Apr. interveniva alla sottoscrizione del diploma, con cui il March. Corrado di Monferrato riconosceva ai Genovesi i privilegi di cui ab antico godevano nelle città di Tiro, di Sidone e di Berito. Un altro Giovanni nel 1202 trovasi eletto al consolato dei placiti.
