E' da un Lottario o Lottaringo disceso in Italia con Ottone III circa il 998, che si vuol fare derivare l'origine e il cognome di questa famiglia, che poi prese anche quello Della Stufa da un'antica terma romana nel luogo della quale sorsero le sue case, poichè tutti i bagni pubblici erano chiamati stufe nell'antico verncaolo fiorentino. Fioriva già questa famiglia nel secolo XIII e di quel tempo sono Ugo cavaliere templario e suo fratello, che fu uno dei 12 fondatori dell'Ordine dei Servi di Maria, di cui divenne generale e che, morto nel 1300, fu poi beatificato. Cambio della Stufa combattè a Mantaperti, e dal figlio di lui Lotteringo nasceva Ugo che ebbe nome di illustre giureconsulto. Molto ambascerie sostenne un altro Ugo, figlio di Lotto, il quale nella sommossa dei Magnati del 1343 guidò il popolo all'assalto delle torri e dei palagi di costoro, che furono cacciati dalla
