Famille originaire de Provence. Jean Suffren de la ville de Salon, fut anobli par lettres patentes de henri III, en 1537, elles furent enregistrées à la chambre des comptes d'Aix le 23 mars 1558. Paul, marquis de Saint-Tropez et de Saint-Cana fut élu maire de la ville en 1725 et en 1779 ces fonctions furent de nouveau remplies par un membre de la même famille. Louis Jérôme de Saint-Tropez, évêque de Sisteron, assista à l'assemblée des États-généraux de 1787. Pierre-André, bailli de Suffren, célèbre navigateur, vice-amiral, chevalier des ordres du roi, grand'croix de Malte, appartient à cette famille. Le chevalier de Suffren de Saint-Tropez fut admis aux honneurs de la Cour le 12 novembre 1784. Pierre-Marie, marquis de Saint-Tropez, maréchal de camp fut appelé à la chambre des pairs par ordonnance du 17 août 1815. Parmi les représentants actuels de cette famille on distingue le comte Fernand Suffren. La plupart des membres de cette famille ont résidé à Istres.
