In un codice del 1550 circa si legge che i Suliani, "homini di grandissimo intelletto et amatori della patria", sono di origine greca, e furono una delle prime famiglie venute a Venezia. Fin dal 741 un Suliani fu maestro di una dignità cavalleresca veneziana. Essi sostennero le ragioni del governo, allora in formazione, con vivo amore nei Consigli tribunizi. Nel 1120 il nobile Marco regalò le sue sostanze al Legato pontificio in Venezia per erigere in pietra la chiesa e il monastero della Carità, promettendo di offrire ogni anno una moneta d'oro chiamata Bisanzio. Furono poi, con i loro discendenti, inclusi nel Maggior Consiglio alla serrata del 1297. Avevano, inoltre, un palazzo a S. Fosca: ricca abitazione di quel Paolo, più volte ambasciatore, che nel 1382 ricusò per modestia la sua elezione a duca di Candia.
