Cette famille est bien véritablement originaire de Bretagne où elle était établie depuis plusieurs siècles. On signale les personnages dignes de mémoire: Guillaume, grand sénéchal de Poitou en 1177; autre Guillaume, croisé en 1248 (Chartes latines de 1191 à 1249 relatives aux croisés, provenant du cabinet Courtois); Jacques épouse en 1452, Renée de Maillé, dont: Jean, seigneur de Ballon, marié en 1475 à Jeanne de Blois, fille de Guillaume, frère juveigneur d'Olivier, dit de Bretagne, comte de Pentièvre; Harduoine, mariée en 1486 à Jean de Coëtquen, seigneur du Vauruffier. Le nom ancien de cette famille est Maingot. On remarque (dès le XIIIème siècle) des alliances importantes avec des familles nobles en Bretagne et autres régions françaises.
