Antica ed assai nobile famiglia, la cui presenza in Crotone risulta attestata sin dalla metà del secolo decimo quinto. Nel 1466, infatti, Pietro Susanna, di Crotone, ebbe, da re Ferdinando, concessione del titolo di nobile e familiare del re. Da Pietro, pervennero Antonello e Gio. Antonio. Il primo andò ad abitare in Ipsigro, ove trovavasi il feudo "il corso di Puzzello", che era stato concesso ai Susanna dal marchese di Crotone, Antonio Cellentes. Giovan Antonio, invece, fu ribelle della Cesarea Maestà "facendo ribellare la città di Crotone dalla predetta Maestà Cesarea nell'ultima invasione del Regno”. Il di lui figlio, il patrizio Roberto sposò la vedova Moisessa Rodio, che gli portò in dote il feudo di Amato, con titolo baronale; Roberto partecipò, nel 1528, all'assedio di Catanzaro. Nel 1541/42, sempre in Crotone, rinveniamo un Bernardino Susanna, sindaco dei nobili, ed un Geronimo Susanna, proprietario di uno schiavo, detto "Cristofalo nigro".
