La famiglia è ricordata dai geneaologisti genovesi fin dal 1135 nella persona di Alberto. Alcuni vogliono che essa provenga da Milano, altri da Zoagli e Chiavari. Molti di essa coprirono eminenti cariche nella Repubblica di Genova. Ugo ed Ansaldo furono tra i firmatori della pace conclusa tra genovesi e pisani; Enrico firmò quella con Savona nel 1333 e Gabriele intervenne al giuramento di fedeltà prestato dai genovesi al Duca di Milano nel 1488. Un ramo di questa famiglia, in seguito alla congiura dei Fieschi, nel 1550. dovette esulare negli Stati del Duca di Savoia. Esso si stabilì a Carrù, poi a Torino, dove rimase anche dopo revocato l'editto di esilio e dopo d'esser stata nuovamente nel 1576 reiscritta nel Libro d'Oro di Genova. In Piemonte coprì alte cariche nell'esercito e nella marina, segnalatosi in opere di beneficenza. Successivamente i rami di Genova si estinsero, non rimanendo che quelli del Piemonte.
