La famiglia ha le stesse origini di quella dei conti Terlago. Il capostipite fu un Paolo, detto Tabarello, da cui discendono i due fratelli Antonio e Giovanni Conto, che, con diploma datato da Parma 5 aprile 1432, ebbero la nobiltà del S.R.I. dall'imperatore Sigismondo.
