Famiglia di origine bolognese. Gaetano, di Luigi, fu un valente giureconsulto e ricoprì in patria le primarie cariche cittadine. S.S. Gregorio XVI, con Breve 15 marzo 1839, lo creò Conte con i discendenti d'ambo i sessi ed il 12 aprile 1839, con Decreto della Assunteria Araldica di Bologna, venne aggregato alla nobiltà Bolognese. Egli sposò Rosa Loreti ed ebbe Ercole, marito della Marchesa Maria Luigia Bovio Silvestri, figlia del marchese Pietro, ultima dell'antica famiglia Bovio, che ebbe in Bologna Andrea Anziano nel 1670, Antonio Gonfaloniere nel 1673, un altro Antonio Anziano nel 1697 e 1700, Gonfaloniere nel 1704-1712-1722, che risiedette a Roma quale ambasciatore ordinario per la città di Bologna alla Corte di Clemente XIV. La famiglia è iscritta nell'Elenco Ufficiale Nobiliare Italiano del 1933, col titolo di Conte (mf.), Nobile di Bologna (mf.) in persona: di Giulia, di Ercole, in Malvasia Gabrielli Tortorelli.
