Antica famiglia di scultori, del ramo occidentale del lago di Como, di chiara ed avita nobiltà, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di illustri genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata in una modificazione del toponimo "Luino" (VA), probabilmente, luogo natio dei capostipiti. Le prime vestigia, lasciate dal casato, rinvengono al secolo decimo quinto, ovvero quanto un Cristoforo figura tra gli artisti che, nella seconda metà del '400, lavorò i marmi della Certosa di Pavia, mentre, nel 1483, Policleto Luoni fu tra gli scultori che lavorarono a Milano, alla costruzione del Portale della facciata della Chiesa di Santa Maria Podone. Ma, d'altronde, la famiglia Luoni, in ogni epoca, sempre riuscì a distinguersi, grazie agli elevati personaggi, a cui diede i natali.
