Famiglia di origine siciliana, discendente da Bartolomeo Tagliavia, signore di Castelvetrano il 18 giugno 1299. Aggiunse il cognome Aragona pel matrimonio di Gian Vincenzo Tagliavia, I° conte di Castelvetrano, titolo conferito dall'imperatore Carlo V il 2 marzo 1522 con Beatrice d'Aragona, nipote del re Federico II di Sicilia. La linea primogenita di questa si estinse in Giovanna Tagliavia Aragona Cortes, n. 12 sett. 1619, deced. 7 maggio 1692, ultima di sua casa, sposata il 5 marzo 1639 con Ettore Pignatelli 4° principe di Noia, n. 14 giugno 1620, deced. 8 marzo 1674, al quale, oltre i numerosi stati e titoli, trasmise la carica, ereditaria, di gran contestabile e grande ammiraglio del regno di Sicilia e il Grandato di Spagna, che andava annesso al ducato di Terranova, concesso nel 1624. Il ramo di Napoli fu portato da Vincenzo Tagliavia e fu decorato con R. Privilegio 31 ag. 1755, di re
