Questa illustre famiglia vanta discendere da un Manfredi di Svevia, che assunse il cognome in seguito ad una riuscita operazione di guerra, nella quale tagliò la ritirata al nemico e la testa ai prigionieri e che portò la famiglia in Milano; donde si vuole che sia passata in Sicilia in persona di un Guido, capitano al servizio dell'imper. Arrigo VI. Possedette in Sicilia il principato di Castelvetrano; i ducati di Alagona e di Terranova; i marchesati di Avola, di Favara, di Terranova e di San Giacomo; la contea di Borgetto; le baronie di Aquirbuna o Nirbuna, Burgio Miluzio, Castelvetrano, Lazzarino, Perrana, ecc. Un Bartolomeo con privilegio del 18 gennaio 1299 ottenne concessione della terra di Castelvetrano; un Federico, milite, fu pretore di Palermo; un Giovanni tenne la stessa carica in detta città; un Francesco la tenne nel 1342-43; un Antonino fu capitano di giustizia in Salemi negli anni 1404-5-6; un
